Spoon Game

1. You stand still holding the spoon by your side next to a wall or other barrier so he remains in position. Start with the spoon on your left and just let him lick. Do this with and without the leash. When the cheese is gone you refill. When he stays next to you when you raise the spoon to refill start doing the same exercise with him on the right.

2) Still working next to a wall, when he is consistently staying next to you when you are refilling the spoon, start taking a tiny step. Really small. Just enough so he stretches his neck and keeps licking. Let him lick for a few seconds and take another tiny step. Etc.

3) if he’s moving smoothly with you and still staying next to you while you refill the spoon, now start taking a real step. Set him up and let him lick for a few seconds then say “let’s go” and take a real step. Stop and let him lick, then do it again. When he is walking with you smoothly, not hanging back,

4) start walking slowly around the room with him, switching from the left side to the right side by living the spoon behind your back. Remember to say “let’s go” every time you stop and start. When he can do this go to your yard and practice there, then do it in front of your house, then in the street. Don’t forget to do your door routine before you go out. Remember to do all steps in both sides.

5) When he is walking nicely with you outside start to fade the spoon away. Take 10 steps, then raise and lower the spoon over 2 steps. If you aren't losing him walk for 8 steps with the spoon, the 4 steps without the spoon. Then 5 steps with the spoon and 5 steps without the spoon. If he's staying with you you can jettison the spoon and start rewarding with your treats.
